A couple of women who engaged in brief conversation with the boys later said they were actually far more concerned about their well-being than they let on during the exchange.

"They [the boys] started getting increasingly strident and jumping on [the car] and pounding on it," said Laurette. "Then we said, 'Let's get away from this and call the police.'"

NSE sees futures in NCDEX, may take up anchor investor's role

MUMBAI: A strategic play is underway in the world of commodity futures. The country's largest bourse, National Stock Exchange (NSE), has signalled its interest in raising its shareholding and assume a bigger role in the commex National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX).

Besides the strong synergies between the two institutions, the rapid growth in futures trade and an urgency among corporates to cover commodity price risks may have shaped NSE's plans to play the anchor investor for the new exchange — a concept that has gained currency in recent times.

NSE has held informal meetings to broach the possibility with other NCDEX stakeholders and has sounded out the Forward Markets Commission (FMC), the regulator for commodity markets. Sources familiar with the development said NSE, which owns 15% in NCDEX, is willing to step up its holding by either infusing fresh money or buying out one of the shareholders.

Liverpool: The English giant crashes out of the F.A. Cup with a 1-0 loss – at home, no less – to unfancied Barnsley. Probably the only hope for coach Rafael Benitez to save his job is advancing in the UEFA Champions League.

Strikes, shortages, sniping: FIFA inspectors are back in South Africa this week for one of their periodic site visits, and the mood is positively unsettled. The headline in the Sunday Times newspaper: "2010 Turmoil." The article begins: "Infighting and mistrust is causing widespread tension within the company entrusted to pull off Africa's first FIFA World Cup. Key players in the country's 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) are barely talking to each other, while chief executive Danny Jordaan is being labeled a 'control freak.' " One LOC official was quoted as saying, "It is an accident waiting to happen." Add to that fears that South Africa's recent electricity shortage could spill into the tournament, and a strike among construction workers at one of the stadiums last week came with demands for double their current wages.

Florida universities could turn away 60,000 students by 2012, report ...

As many as 60,000 Florida students could get shut out of state universities during the next few years because of enrollment caps and budget cuts, a state education group predicts.

ENLACE Florida, or Engaging Latino Communities for Education, painted the gloomy picture in a report released this month called "Higher Education in Florida on the Brink."

While ENLACE specializes in Hispanic education issues, the report studies the potential effects on all college-bound students.
